  • Your “I CAN” is more important than your IQ.
  • Everything is created twice, first in the mind and then in reality.
  • I once read that people who study others are wise but those who study themselves are enlightened.

I’ve always wondered what this book is all about because the title is so catchy but interesting at the same time.

What we can initially get from this book is, there is monk, who first of all has a Ferrari, (which is amazing) but he sold it.

Now who doesn’t love Ferrari and a great mansion, I will loveee to Ferrari with great mansion.

Well our main protagonist doesn’t love it .

Julian (the main protagonist), who has everything, was unhappy and that’s why he sold it out completely and live his life like a monk.

It turns out he didn’t need those things.

What he wants is- wisdom, internal happiness, and enlightenment.

Well, this is a story of the guy named Julian who was a very successful lawyer. He was famous, and rich. He had a big mansion, a private jet, and of course, a Ferrari. But even after achieving these huge things in his life, he was not happy and satisfied. He wanted more fame, more money, for which he almost had to work 18 hours a day.

But as consequences, he got divorced; he looked so aged even though he was just in his 50. So once during a regular courtroom session, he felt some pain in his chest and suddenly he fainted. Doctors declared that he got a heart attack. When Julian came back to senses, doctors advised him not to go so hard on himself, as he wasn’t ready for the pain and pressure.

So they asked Julian to quit his job. This came as a shock to him. He had been winning all cases his entire life, but when it came to the case of his own life, he looked like a loser. Soon he realised his mistakes and he really want to work on them.

So one fine morning, he took a very bold step. He started selling every materialistic thing that he possessed. He sold his mansion, his private jet, and he even sold his Ferrari. Then he set out on a journey in search of the true meaning of life.

This journey was towards the mystical land of India across the great Himalayan range where Indian monks lived. These monks were not ordinary, as they were among the people with highest level of wisdom, and they were capable of liberating the potential of anyone’s soul, body and mind.

Julian started living there with those monks in that village. Monk leader decided to teach Julian the principles of life on a condition that Julian will not keep that knowledge to himself. Rather, he would spread it to the outside world.

So, The Monk started narrating him a story:

Imagine you’re sitting in a beautiful garden which is full of different type of trees, flowers, and you can see many birds chirping around. The flowers in the garden smell really nice and you are having a good time there.

You notice that there’s a lighthouse in the middle of the garden and suddenly the door of that lighthouse creaks open as you can see a sumo wrestler coming out of the lighthouse. It’s really weird to look at the sumo wrestler, as he’s just wearing underwear made of thin wire. He wanders around and finds a golden stopwatch lying in the garden. As soon as he tries to pick it up, he slips and he falls on the ground, lying motionless. After some time, you could see that he gets back to his senses, probably because of the nice fragrance of the rose in the garden and he looks towards his left. On his left was a path paved out of small diamonds which led to a place where the sumo wrestler can find all the happiness in his life. He starts walking on that path and soon gets out of sight.

Julian thinks this was some kind of a joke as this story made no sense to him. The monk then said that this is no ordinary story, as this story has “seven biggest principles of life”. He then went there and started explaining the story, leading it to its hidden meaning.

1. The first principle is related to the garden, which symbolizes our brain:

If you sow good seeds, you’ll eventually see nice fruits on trees, good plants bearing beautiful flowers. But if you put garbage inside the garden, or if you just stop watering the plants, the place will soon turn into a dump.

Similarly, with your brain. If you pour positive thoughts like kindness, love, respect, empathy and if you will keep motivate yourself to the positive, your brain will become a beautiful garden, and if you don’t, your brain will become a devil’s place and turn out into a dump.

So always think positive to stay positive.

Also this exercise will give you inner peace.

2. The second principle is related to the lighthouse, which symbolizes goals in your life:

A lighthouse shows the right direction to the ships sailing in an ocean. Similarly, we should choose our right direction to achieve our goals in life.

Knowing our destination, set our targets and consistently moving to the path. Sooner or later we will reach to the destination.

3. The third principle is related to the sumo wrestler, which symbolizes kaizen:

“Kaizen is a Japanese word that means continuous learning and improvement.”

As sumo wrestler has to be very strict and specific about his diet, to practice perfect for the match and his working on his body and mind.

Similarly we should always keep learning and developing our mind and body.

4. The fourth principle is related to the underwear that the wrestler is wearing which is made up of wires, which symbolizes self-control and discipline:

It might be a small thing, but without that underwear, the wrestler will be naked, which will be an unpleasant watch.

Now for, wire from inside. It usually made up with thin wires which together form a cable. As a single wire was weak but together they become strong.

Similarly small things made great impact on our life.

Our self control and discipline made us unbelievable. It defines us as an individual.

5. The fifth principle is related to the golden stopwatch which symbolizes time:

No matter how rich or poor you are, you only have 24 hours in an entire day, but the way we utilize these 24 hours is what makes us happy or sad, rich or poor.

By the time you woke up in the morning, someone else is running from the gym feeling fresh, fit and happy.

Most of the people have habit of procrastination, which leads them nowhere. This is a total waste of time.

But this doesn’t mean we have to work 24 hours, but yes whatever we do, we should feel happy.

My point here is, we should always organise our 24 hours.

6. The sixth principle is related to the fragrant rose:

There’s always a trace of fragrance remaining in the hand of those who give flowers to others.

It’s a metaphor.

So here this flower and its fragrance symbolize social cause.

Which says whenever you help someone else, some of the benefits will come back right to you.

Now this doesn’t mean that you have to do charity, but yes your one small and simple act of kindness goes a long way with you.

You can start it even today by praising someone’s hard work.

7. The seventh principle is related to the path of diamonds: which represent the small moment of happiness that comes our way in life:

These small moments comes in present. As a human being we always focused or worried about our past or future. We never really enjoy these present moments. The present is supposed to be lived happily which is our path of diamonds.

These were the seven lessons that the monk taught Julian which completely changed his life. As promised, Julian spread out this knowledge to the outer world, and that is what we all should do to help our loved ones get all the happiness in life. So share this summary with everyone you care about to become 1% better than others.
