Hatha Yoga ( हठ योग )

Hatha Yoga

Hatha yoga is a branch of yoga. The Sanskrit word हठ literally means “force” and thus alludes to a system of physical techniques.

History of Hatha Yoga:

In India, hatha yoga is associated in popular tradition with the Yogis of the Natha Sampradaya through its traditional founder. Matsyendranath, who is celebrated as a saint in both Hindu and Buddhist tantric and haṭha yoga schools. Almost all hathayogic texts belong to the Nath siddhas, and the important ones are credited to Matsyendranath’s disciple, Gorakhnath or
Gorakshanath. According to the Dattatreya Yoga Sastra, there are two forms of haṭha yoga: one practiced by Yajnavalkya consisting of the eight limbs of yoga, and another practiced by Kapila
consisting of eight mudras.

The oldest dated text so far found to describe hatha yoga, the 11th-century Amrtasiddhi, comes from a tantric Buddhist milieu. The oldest texts to use the terminology of hatha are also Vajrayana Buddhist. Later hatha yoga texts adopt the practices of hatha yoga mudras into a Saiva system, melding it with Layayoga
methods which focus on the raising of kundalini through energy channels and chakras.

In the 20th century, a development of hatha yoga, focusing particularly on asanas (the physical postures), became popular
throughout the world as a form of physical exercise. This modern form of yoga is now widely known simply as “yoga”.

Hatha Yoga traces its origins especially to Gorakhnath, the
legendary 11th-century founder of the Kanphata Yogis, but it grew out of yogic traditions dating back at least as far as Patanjali (2nd century bce or 5th century ce), author of the Hindu classics the Yoga-sutras and the Mahabhasya (“Great Commentary”).

We offer our salutation to the first expounder and master of the universe who has preached the knowledge of hatha yoga which shines or stands as ladder/stepping stone for them who wish climb and reach the highest peak of yoga known as samadhi or rajyoga.

Hathayoga is a kind of yoga which is related with the control over pranavayu which can be attained through control over respiration. Hathyoga in the modern times is wrongly translated as physical yoga which gives a wrong understandings that hathayoga is for the sake of . ‘Ha’ stands for ‘Sun’, ‘pingala’ and ‘Tha’ stands for ‘Moon’ ‘ida’. Our total personality is guided by the way we breath.

Hatha Yoga

Aims of Hatha Yoga:

Hatha yoga focuses on asanas and pranayama. its aim is to master the practice of postures and control one’s breath. These, hatha yoga fundamentals leads to “opening of chakras, healing of inner imbalances, concentration of mind, strengthening of soul and finally energizing of nadis”.

Swami Satyananda Saraswati describes the main objective of
hatha yoga in the Introduction of The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (HYP) (Muktibodhananda 1998) as: “to create an absolute balance of the interacting activities and processes of the physical body, mind and energy.” He continues describing that if this balance is achieved, the central force, sushumna nadi, can be awakened and that supposes to allow human consciousness to evolve.

Misconception of Hatha Yoga:

Some people consider a particular form of physical exercise as Hatha Yoga. It is a grave error to consider Hot Yoga, Power Yoga or any of such fads present around the world as belonging to any
tradition of Hatha Yoga. They can be gymnastics, aerobics or
anaerobic but not yoga. In Hatha Yoga, Asana is meant for Sthairya (steadiness) and Mudra is meant for Dridhata
(Sturdiness). A body exercise qualifies as Hatha Yogic exercise only if three conditions are met: the posture should be maintained for a long period of time ; Prana should be regulated during the practice and the mind should focused on certain important points
in the body.

Hatha Yoga is not about building a strong and supple body. It is about developing the highest level of control over the body, senses, Prana and mind in order to transcend them at will. Hatha
Yoga is vitally important because the Veda declares,
“नायमात्मा बलहीनने लभ्यः”. No spiritual path is for the weak. Brahmcharya and abstinence from sensual pleasures are the non-negotiable pre-requisites of Hatha Yoga. Only self-deluded people can take up these practices to increase their bodily pleasures! Basic practices of Hatha Yoga cure diseases, dispel flab and make the body both strong and supple. If people remain stuck at this level without going beyond, it is their choice. However, such people must know that they are not practicing Yoga if they fail to grow spiritually. They are not practicing Yoga if their practices do not develop any yearning for the Divine. They are not practicing Yoga
if all forms of attachments do not leave them one by one over a period of time. The first symptom of correct practice of any Yoga Asana or Pranayama is the unmistakable experience of peace and purity. Such peace and purity becomes our nature with long practice and sustains us in whatever path we take, Jnana, Bhakti, Karma, Mantra, Laya or Raja.

Note*

Hatha Yoga traces its origins especially to Gorakhnath, the
legendary 11th-century founder of the Kanphata Yogis, but it grewout of yogic traditions dating back at least as far as Patanjali (2nd century bce or 5th century ce), author of the Hindu classics the Yoga-sutras and the Mahabhasya (“Great Commentary”) Hatha
Yoga, more specifically, has been traced back to about the eleventh century a.d. Hatha yoga developed in India throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The first Hatha yoga school opened in 1924 in Mysore. The origins of hatha yoga have been traced back to the eleventh century a.d. The Sanskrit word ha means “sun” and that means “moon,” and thus hatha, or literally sun-moon yoga, strives to balance opposing parts of the physical body, the front and back, left and right, top and bottom.
